How to Play Okey: The Complete 4-Player Tile Game Guide

7 min read

Okey is Turkey's signature 4-player tile game — part rummy, part pure pattern recognition. Here's how to go from zero to your first win.

The tiles

Okey uses 106 tiles: numbers 1–13 in four colors (red, yellow, blue, black), each duplicated, plus two jokers. Before the deal, an "indicator" tile is drawn and the tile one number higher in the same color becomes that round's wildcard — the "okey" tile, which can substitute for any tile in any set.

Drawing and discarding

Each player starts with 14 tiles (the first player gets 15). On your turn, draw one tile — either from the closed deck or the top of the discard pile — then discard one tile from your hand. Play continues clockwise.

Valid groups

You win by arranging your entire hand into valid groups of 3 or more tiles:

  • Runs — consecutive numbers in the same color (e.g. red 5-6-7).
  • Sets — the same number in three or four different colors (e.g. 8 in red, yellow, blue).

The joker/okey tile can stand in for any missing tile in either pattern.

Winning the hand

When your entire 14-tile hand (plus the tile you're about to discard) forms valid groups, you declare a win by discarding your final tile — or, for a small bonus, by discarding the actual joker tile once your hand is already complete without it.
