Domino Tips: Counting Pips and Blocking Your Opponent

4 min read

Dominoes reward attention more than luck. A few habits go a long way.

Track what's already on the table

As tiles get played, mentally note which numbers are becoming scarce. If most of the 5s are already down, holding a 5 becomes riskier — you may get stuck with it if the chain closes off.

Hold your doubles carefully

Doubles (like 4-4) can only connect on one number, making them less flexible to play but often valuable to keep in reserve for exactly the right moment.

Block on purpose when you're ahead

If your hand's pip total is low and the round is close to locking up, deliberately playing to close off both ends of the chain can end the round in your favor even if you can't empty your hand first.

Don't dump high-pip tiles too early

If you're not sure the round will end quickly, keeping your options open matters more than immediately shedding your highest-value tiles.
