5 Tavla Strategy Tips to Win More Matches

5 min read

Knowing the rules gets you playing tavla — these five habits are what separate players who consistently win from players who just roll dice.

1. Track your pip count

Your pip count is the total distance all your checkers need to travel to bear off. Add up each checker's distance and compare it to your opponent's. If you're significantly ahead, race — avoid unnecessary contact. If you're behind, look for hitting opportunities instead.

2. Build your home board early

A strong home board (points 1–6) makes it painful for your opponent to re-enter from the bar if you hit them. Prioritize making points in your home board over advancing checkers randomly.

3. Don't leave blots you don't have to

A "blot" is a single exposed checker. Every blot is a hit waiting to happen. When you have a choice of moves, prefer the one that leaves the fewest — or least exposed — blots.

4. Weigh the risk of a hit

Hitting an opponent's checker feels great, but if it exposes you to a return hit on a bad number, it can backfire. Ask: how many of the opponent's next roll combinations hit me back?

5. Don't rush bearing off

When bearing off, keep an eye on whether your opponent still has checkers that could hit you. Clearing your board unevenly can leave a blot at exactly the wrong moment.

Put these into practice in a real match — play Tavla on GAMEAREA and climb the ranked ladder.
